The Jamaica Egg Farmers Association is making another appeal to the government to remove tax on eggs. Acting President of the association, Mark Campbell, asserts that the GCT on eggs will impact the livelihood of egg farmers, with less purchase due to the high prices. He is yet again appealing to the government to lift the GCT on eggs.
After several appeals were made to remove the general consumption tax on the high protein item, Campbell says the association is extremely concerned that the government has failed to fulfill its promise. Campbell says the burdensome tax adds 15% to the cost of eggs, noting that the consistent appeal to remove GCT on the item is due to the challenge it puts on consumers. Meanwhile, the acting president says once the price of eggs becomes a burden to consumers, the demand will be less therefore egg production will be impacted for the worse.
Campbell admits the egg tax is one of several issues needing attention. Others include lowering the price of fertilizers and animal feed.
