Jamaica Urged To Boost Food Security

Jamaica is one of 50 countries included in a major food systems assessment programme. The study found that while the country is primed for sustainable food systems, it is not capitalizing on its natural assets. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recommends that improved access to land, finance and training will bolster food systems. Though Jamaica has a greater potential for food security than other Caribbean islands, sustainable food systems continue to face significant challenges. The food systems profile, compiled by the food and agriculture organization revealed vulnerabilities that the agriculture sector should strengthen.

Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Pearnel Charles Jr is encouraging innovation, investment and productivity in ensuring food security. He says this profile will help the ministry understand and develop solutions to challenges facing the sector. He says through the grow smart, eat smart initiative, there will be a major thrust to encourage Jamaicans to eat more wholesome and nutritious foods and grow their own food. European Union delegate Aniceto Rodriguez Ruiz says this report forms a crucial foundation for change.
