Jamaican Farm Workers Claim Mistreatment in Canada

Jamaican farm workers in Canada are still in a position of discomfort, over what they say are less than favourable working conditions. They continue to appeal to the government for intervention, despite their claims being dismissed by the Minister.

Some Jamaican farm workers in Canada, continue to speak out on alleged mistreatment and inhumane conditions, which they say they have been subjected to for some time. Their claims of abuse, have been rejected however by Labour Minister, Karl Samuda, who said he visited farms in August and there was no evidence of mistreatment. The Minister’s rejection has however angered many, including the farmers themselves, who are calling for government assistance.

Canadian Immigration Lawyer Mackeda Bramwell says this issue is a long-standing problem. She explains there are several reports of Jamaican farm workers living in deplorable conditions. Bramwell says the farm workers have reached a point of frustration. Many have expressed a feeling of betrayal. They say complaining leads to another problem. She reveals some farm workers are scared of making complaints and have contacted their relatives.
