Jamaica’s AI Task Force Assessing Local Skills

Jamaica has taken a significant step by aligning itself with countries like the United States and the United Kingdom, aiming to establish comprehensive policies regulating the burgeoning integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across various facets of society. To facilitate this, the government has instituted an AI Task Force charged with laying a factual groundwork for the formulation of a national AI policy. This initiative arrives amid the prevalence of notable AI systems such as OpenAI’s Chat GPT, Google’s BERT, and Microsoft’s Bing AI, emblematic of the tech giants leveraging Generative Artificial Intelligence or Generative AI. This AI technology is adept at generating diverse content types encompassing text, imagery, audio, and synthetic or simulated data. Christopher Reckord, Chairman of Jamaica’s AI Task Force, stresses the urgency of this move, emphasizing the necessity to prevent Jamaica from lagging behind in the global AI landscape. He underscores that the discussions have commenced, guided by Jamaica’s Vision 2030 Development Plan, positioning the country strategically within the rapidly evolving realm of AI technology.
