Homeless persons in the corporate area now have a place of refuge in Downtown Kingston. Government officials and members of the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation were in attendance at the official opening of the first homeless center. On Friday the first official homeless center was opened on upper Kings Street in Downtown Kingston.
Keynote speaker at the ceremony, Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie says opening this center symbolizes change in the society. Minister McKenzie notes that other facilities are also slated to be opened in other parishes.
He sought to reassure the center will operate on a 24 hour basis. Current Mayor of Kingston Senator Delroy Williams admits that since the beginning of his tenure homelessness was not fully on the radar.
