Jamaica’s Unemployment Down in July 2021

The Statistical Institute of Jamaica’s, (STATIN) reported that the unemployment rate for July 2021 as gone down as the rate was reported at 8.5 percent. This is 4.1 percentage points lower than the 12.6 percent out-turn for the corresponding period last year. The number of unemployed persons went down by 49,200 or 30.4 percent.

The country’s employed labour force grew in the second quarter of 2021, that is according to the July 2021 labour force survey findings. Director General at the Statistical Institute of Jamaica, Carol Coy noted that reference for the July report was June 20, 2020 to June 26, 2021, she added that base of the findings; it is estimated that 1.2 million persons were in the employed labour force, which was 93,400 more when compared to July 2020.

Coy noted that the number of employed males increased by 9 percent while the number of employed females increased by 7.5 percent when compared to July 2020. Construction paved the way for this jump recording some of the highest employment figures for the period.
