On Thursday, the Commissioner of Police along with the Chief Technical Director of the Financial Investigations Division (FID) signed a memorandum of understanding to deprive criminals of benefiting from their ill-gotten gains.
Under this MOU the FID will provide full and frank disclosure of information, forensic assistance as well as legal assistance and advice to the JCF with respect to financial crime investigations.
MOU will enhance the collaboration between forensic examiners and investigators while adding extra layers of security to the fid’s operations.
Police Commissioner, Major General Antony Anderson and the FID’s Chief Technical Director, Selvin Hay signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Thursday aimed at strengthening both organizations’ response to, among other things, money laundering, organized crime, fraud and financial crimes.
It is anticipated that there will be an increase in the use of financial investigation by the Jamaica Constabulary Force, particularly in cases of trafficking in narcotics and arms, corruption, extortion and related crimes.
One of the aims of the financial investigation is to remove the benefit of profit from crime through asset forfeiture.
Hay says, this MOU solidifies the excellent working relationship which has always existed between the JCF and the FID.
Adding that it is mutually beneficial and formalizes the collaboration as they strive to tackle the scourge of organised crime, fraud and corruption, thereby depriving criminals of benefiting from ill-gotten gains
Meantime, the JCF’s recruit training syllabus will also be expanded to include, among other areas, Financial Investigations and the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA).
