Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson on Tuesday revealed that in just six days, 27 illegal firearms have been recovered. He explains that the factors driving murders stem from young men with access to guns and gang violence; noting that in instances where the accused provides meaningful assistance to the police, their plea bargain should make provision for a reduced sentence.
The Commissioner was speaking at a Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) Media Briefing, where an update on matters relating to crime and security in Jamaica was provided. In just five months, between January and May this year, the police reported a 42 percent increase in ammunition seizures, and a 12 percent increase in firearm seizures while there has also been a 6.3% increase in murders.
Barely a week into June and 27 firearms have been recovered. Commissioner Anderson confirms there has been an increase in murders in Area One which includes Trelawny, St. James, Westmoreland, and Hanover. Watch the full report:
