Residents of Pretoria Road in Maxfield St. Andrew were elated Wednesday, August 4, after a team from the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) visited the community to install street lights. Residents say for almost five years they have been without functional street lights, and this they believe has resulted in the escalation of murders, as criminals use the darkness to their advantage.
Eugene Kelly, Councilor for the division, says he is beyond thankful to the JPS for putting in the street lights. Kelly says up to nine (9) out of 40 of the roads were without light but, he says JPS will be lighting seven (7) of those roads on August 4.
Kelly says not only will residents benefit but law enforcers too. He adds that there should however, be an oversight team that is alerted when a street light is no longer functional as it costs the country.
