The Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) has called on Prime Minister Andrew Holness to clarify his statements made recently regarding preferential treatment for teachers who have received the COVID-19 jab.
Meantime, President of the Jamaica Teachers Association Jasford Gabriel says Mr. Holness’ statements come as a surprise. Mr. Gabriel points out that from the initial stages of vaccine rollout teachers were not among the priority group. He said the JTA had to make a case, lobbying through the Ministry of Education prior so the Prime Minister’s statement was not one that he expected.
He noted that statements such as these can raise the level apprehension among teachers and go against the principle that they are trying to achieve.
With the threat of the Delta variant arriving in Jamaica, Mr. Gabriel notes that the current modality of a blended approach to teaching is the most suitable method. He adds the Jamaica Teachers Association is looking forward to having further discussions with Prime Minister.
