The Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) has made well on its promise to host a conference airing all issues being faced by teachers locally. The Association is especially calling on lawmakers to revise the Jamaica Teaching Council Bill before passing it, as they fear it will criminalize and wipe away many current teachers.
Speaking at the conference held in Montego Bay, the JTA President elect Mr Leighton Johnson says the bill will wipe out some of the same teachers who have been enduring severe underpayment for years. He also criticized the government for giving teachers a four per cent salary increase, calling it a slap in the face.
He is urging the government to provide affordable housing solutions for teachers. This conference follows a rowdy exchange between JTA President and several members of the house recently, where he was reprimanded for saying the JTC Bill will decimate the profession. More details in this report:
