On the heels of a demolition carried out by the government near Clifton, St. Catherine, Member of Parliament (MP) and Deputy Speaker of the Lower House, Juliet Holness went under fire for claiming that wherever there is an illegal settlement, there are comrades. The MP defended her stance on CVM’s Panel Discussion last evening, noting some political representatives continue to give Jamaicans the leeway to develop on other people’s lands.
MP Holness says there are acres of land across the country that are suitable for living, however, she says there is a structured way to go about seeking the use of those lands. She says many of the issues crippling squatters are consequent to them being placed on lands without approval, taking away the opportunity for proper planning and zoning. Holness is challenging the PNP, when developing communities, to ensure the quality of the living spaces is good enough for even them to occupy.
She also said there is no point in providing housing without basic amenities. Watch the report below:
