The historic Klansman Gang Trial resumed on Monday, April 2. A cybercrimes expert took to the witness stand to analyze digital forensic evidence that has played a key role in the trial so far.
The witness was tasked with examining an extraction that was done by another officer and a previous crown witness. The examined data was placed on two thumb drives and a CD that was submitted into evidence. An advanced logical extraction that takes out images, audio, video, call logs, contacts and other data was done on 3 phones and 2 sim cards. The data on one of those phones which is also in evidence is a Vonino Xylo Z was painstakingly analyzed.
The extraction generated a .pdf report which revealed data about 70 contact numbers, numerous call recordings, and WhatsApp audio.
Chief Justice Bryan Sykes clarified the purpose of going through the metadata in the report. He assumed it was to remove the suspicion that the calls were made by the owner of that phone. Once this analysis of evidence is completed by the crown, a witness from a service provider will take the stand to provide information about calls made between alleged gang members.
