The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) has been actively issuing notices of irregularity on several apartments now under construction.
Even as some contractors insist the reported breaches have been addressed, refusing to be filmed for this report, the mayor of Kingston says punitive measures will be taken against those who fail to comply. This, on the heels of a Supreme Court order which chastised the KSAMC and the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) for a perceived limited oversight at a site in breach.
CVM Live spoke with Kingston Mayor Delroy Williams while visiting construction sites in St. Andrew. He says due to previous encounters with developers the municipality is taking a more defensive approach. He says in respect to the KSAMC building act in order for a contractor to resume construction, approval must be sought from the municipality.
Meanwhile, Mayor Williams asserts if a developer should refuse to comply there will be punitive measures by court order. He says the construction sector is crucial to the country’s development and must be treated respectfully.
