The famed Ray Ray Market will soon be turned into a car park and taxi bay. The plans were announced by the mayor of Kingston Wednesday during a tour of the burnt-out market.
Local Government Minister and west Kingston Member of Parliament, Desmond McKenzie is in support of the change noting that section of the market was never intended for vending.
Fire razed a section of the market on February 22 while another fire ravaged a section of the popular oxford street vending area, Sunday. Political representatives toured the Ray Ray Market and oxford mall Wednesday morning. The two sections of the downtown market were razed by fire within 4 days of each other. While vendors in the market look forward to a rebuild of their stalls, Mayor Williams announced plans to repurpose the area.
MP Desmond McKenzie supports this proposal. He calls the Ray Ray Market a “bad investment”. Meanwhile police have identified a suspect in the case of the Ray Ray Market fire. They are seeking the public’s help to locate the suspected arsonist who they say is from the Matthew’s Lane area. As for the oxford mall, the Kingston and St. Andrew municipal corporation continues cleanup before refurbishing begins.
