Lawyer Urges Police to Handle Evidence with Care

Attorney-at-Law, Donovan Williams is urging the police to handle with care the evidence or exhibits taken into custody to prevent more no-case submissions. His remarks follow a no-case submission on Thursday, November 4, in the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court, where his client and a co-accused walked after it was refuted their vehicle allegedly containing parcels of cocaine was searched without them being present.

The Attorney says his client was one of two people charged for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act, namely possession of cocaine, conspiracy to traffic cocaine, dealing in cocaine, and trafficking cocaine.

The charges follow an incident on January 2, 2019, in which a motor car owned and driven by his client was stopped and searched by the police along Spanish Town Road, St. Andrew.

Williams says no prohibited substance was found at the time and the occupants were asked by the police, to drive the car onto the Narcotics Headquarters compound also in the area. He says shortly after arriving on the compound the car was securely locked and sealed. But he says two days later a team from the Caribbean search unit searched the vehicle and allegedly found two parcels of cocaine.

He says the search was conducted in the absence of his client and the co-accused, raising doubt.

Williams says his client affirms he knew nothing about the substance. He says he along with Queens Counsel, Tom Tavares Finson representing the other person, filed no-case submissions which were accepted by the judge. The attorney and politicians are urging the police to do more to protect evidence in matters going forward.
