Learning With COVID 19: A.I.S.K Welcomes Students

There are fears that the recent spike in COVID-19 cases could put students further behind. While the start of Government schools is delayed due to the pandemic one private learning center in Kingston is already back in session. Cvm Live visited the American International School of Kingston to learn more about the protocols in place.

The American International School of Kingston, A.I.S.K says it has been preparing for the reopening since March, When the Government announced the closure of all schools after the country recorded the very first case of COVID-19. Five months later, and more than 1200 confirmed COVID-19 cases, the school welcomed students for the week of August 17.

Projects Director at A.I.S.K, Nicola Melhado describes some of the measures implemented. The A.I.S.K  is a private International school. It has a population of 300 students. Students arrive and leave at different times to prevent large gatherings.

The school also has a mask compliance policy and temperature scanner at the gates to check students and staff before entering the school compound. The Project Director says there will be no extra-curricular activities, not only as a precautionary measure but also as they focus on the curriculum, much of which she says was affected by online classes.

She described the recent spike in COVID-19 cases as very alarming. And despite having reopened, they are mindful that a closure may be imminent while alluding to some lessons that have already been learned.
