The legality of the most recently declared States of Public Emergency (SOPEs), may endure a legal challenge, as Leader of the Opposition, Mark Golding, seeks the court’s guidance on the constitutionality of the SOPEs. Golding is questioning if the level of societal violence at the time, met the requirements necessary for the declarations.
The Peoples National Party (PNP) is again contemplating a legal challenge to the imposition of the States of Public Emergency according to Party President Mark Golding. The Opposition Leader describes the most recent declaration of the SOPEs as an attempt to circumvent the limits that the constitution has placed on the Prime Minister’s powers.
Subsequent to the Proclamations for the SOPEs being announced, members of civil society also expressed concerns about the delayed publication of the regulations that will govern detentions. Watch the report below:
