The conversation around the legalization of abortion in Jamaica has been reignited, following a Parliamentarian’s intent to further advocate for the act to be decriminalized.
Successive administrations have tried to define what constitutes abortion over the past three decades.
But it is simply a matter that has proven to be so delicate, and has been hard to get past the initial views and concerns.
The debate in Jamaica follows a landmark ruling in Argentina in December to legalize abortion.
People’s National Party‘s Spokesperson on Health, Dr. Morais Guy, says the Opposition will be making its position clear in short order.
However, as a Medical Doctor, he says he believes women should be allowed to choose.
State Minister of Health and Wellness, Juliet Cuthbert Flynn has indicated that she’ll be advocating for the legalization of abortion.
But some members of the religious community remain opposed.
