Residents of Victoria Town in Manchester, blocked sections of the main road in their community, protesting Friday’s mob killing of a man they say is innocent but was mistaken for a thief. They are demanding accountability. 61-year-old Cheiftin Campbell of Victoria Town in Manchester took his last breath on Friday after he was allegedly attacked and beaten by an indignant mob in the town of Mandeville. Reports are that he was suspected of being a thief. Lawmen were summoned to Manchester Road in the parish where Campbell was seen lying on the roadway with multiple injuries.
He was handcuffed and transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Though the police are investigating the incident the residents of Victoria Town are of the view that it is a case of mistaken identity. They blocked the main road in their community in protest, saying Campbell was a community oriented man and a decent citizen. Councillor for the Porus division, Claudia Morant Baker says she knew Mr. Campbell and spoke to him two days before he met his demise.
She says the community has lost a legend. The police are said to be reviewing surveillance footage of the area to assist in their investigations.
