Police have detained a Manchester taxi operator who was seen on video beating another taxi operator in Mandeville, Manchester on Thursday, July 29. The dispute which was allegedly triggered over a passenger took place on Caledonia Road, metres away from the Mandeville Hospital, has left one man hospitalised and another in police custody.
Screams of excitement and shock could be heard as civilians watched from a safe distance, seemingly paralyzed by horror as the man was seen with an object resembling a baseball bat, hitting his victim repeatedly. It appears at one point in the 2-minute video that the attacker drove over his colleague.
Moments after more persons gathered at the scene, some horrified and running after seeing the injured man. A police in plain clothes arrived and detained the attacker, and a second plainclothes policeman later appeared in the video as they tried to restore order and seek medical attention for the injured man.
Head of the Manchester Police, Deputy Superintendent Lloyd Derby, said while it is uncertain what caused the dispute, it is alleged the attack began over a passenger. DSP Derby says once investigations intensify it is likely charges will be laid against the accused. He also confirmed that the injured man remains hospitalized and is now in stable condition.
