A massive early morning blaze at the Highgate Market in St. Mary makes it the fourth market fire, since January, destroyed by fire. A sizable section of the facility was gutted, and the belongings of vendors and shop owners damaged. In a matter of months another market has been gutted by fire, and again the damage is being projected to amount to millions, according to the Jamaica Fire Brigade.
CVM Live understands that at about 4:30 Saturday morning, there was a massive blaze at the high gate market in St. Mary. Among the remains were charred items and a piece of the building’s structure.
Deputy Superintendent of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, Andrew Wileman says shop owners are facing much financial loss, as he details how his team controlled and extinguished the fire. However, one shop owner tells our news team, people stole the items she managed to save. She says she has no plan b at this moment, and is seeking assistance any way possible. Another woman, carol henry through sighs and cries says this has greatly hampered her livelihood.
The conflagration follows several other major fires, including Oxford and Ray Ray Markets in February and Coronation Market in March.
