The Portmore City Municipality on November 27 partnered with the Jamaica combined cadet force and the forestry department to plant over 30 trees. Three million timber and ornamental trees are the focus of the 3-year initiative. The second phase of the Portmore city municipality’s contribution to the three million trees in three years project saw the Charles Drive Canal, receiving a facelift.
Portmore Mayor Leon Thomas says this initiative will be extended across all major canals with the planting of the neem tree species. He says the leaves of the tree will fall into the drain producing a scent that will reduce the breeding of mosquitoes.
Forest Technician Stephen Williams says this initiative is necessary especially in a community known for very high temperatures. He notes the almond and seaside mahoe trees planted are crucial to soil stability and shade. Mayor Thomas is urging residents to adopt a tree.
