The law protects wrongdoers!
That’s according to Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie. His remarks follow a series of questions from journalists after the Supreme Court ruled in favour of a couple who challenged a construction company, Monday, December 20, 2021.
The court identified breaches of the building code and major oversight and supervision on the part of the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) and the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA).
A day after the court ruling which noted blatant disregard by one contractor for the municipal permit and approvals granted to construct a residential apartment in St. Andrew.
The court questioned the supervision and oversight that was to be provided namely by the KSAMC and NEPA who should be keen on preventing the overbuilding.
He admits there’s been a struggle between the authorities namely municipal corporations and wealthy or influential Jamaicans investing in construction. Among the issues to be addressed are challenges preventing their full functioning and the way forward.
