Minister Williams Urges Principals: Explore Alternatives to Lockouts

Minister Fayval Williams calls on school leaders to find alternative discipline methods instead of locking out students for dress code violations. Williams emphasized during a Post-Cabinet briefing that there are better solutions than sending students home for minor infractions.
The awaited dress code policy draft, accessible on the Education Ministry’s website, could remove the need for male Rastafarian students to cover their locks. Educators’ input is encouraged before finalization.
Williams highlighted efforts to involve as many principals as possible in reviewing the draft and warned of consequences for those breaching grooming guidelines once finalized.
“In-school activities and detention are options. Locking students out should be a last resort,” Williams stressed, urging parental involvement. The draft dress code policy promotes fairness, equitable treatment, and due process in schools’ specific rules.
