In a bid to conserve water, one water company has partnered with the National Water Commission successfully saving water in Kingston and St. Andrew and Portmore. The water efficiency project is estimated at some us 42-million dollars. In 2015, the National Water Commission and MIYA Jamaica signed a contract for a 5-year co-management water efficiency project estimated at $42m, to maximize efficiency of the Kingston and St. Andrew water system.
The non-revenue water reduction project was also launched in Portmore. A ceremony was held on Thursday to recognize staff. Main speaker, minister without portfolio for economic growth and job creation, Matthew Samuda notes since its inception the program has been a success. He says an investment of us-13 million was used to extend the program in Portmore.
According to Samuda water savings in Portmore have resulted in major water savings. He adds water supply is critical for development. Samuda also alluded to the motion approved in the lower house for Portmore to become Jamaica’s 15th parish. He’s optimistic Portmore will be the first parish to have full access to water. In the meantime, country manager of MIYA, Alvaro Ramalho says the pump stations have been saving electricity on a monthly basis.
