The Ministry of Health and Wellness is looking to eradicate the Aedes aegypti mosquitos by way of a Sterile Breeding Project at the National Mass Rearing Facility. The project seeks to act as a response to control the mosquito population wit the use of sterile male mosquitos.
Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. Christopher Tufton says this is another way to control the Dengue virus, especially with the increase in rainfall recently and that it an increase in these mosquitos should be expected as a result.
The mass rearing facility currently breeds an average of 5 million mosquito each week. Medical Entomologist Sherine Huntley -Jones says, that only male sterile mosquitos will be released to mate with the existing female mosquitos and that these male mosquitos do not bite.
