One prominent lawyer is among those who continue to bash the Security Minister for his comments in Westmoreland last week, noting Minister Dr Horace Chang’s statement is misguided.
Among the critics, Defense Attorney, Bert Samuels. He says the Minister has stepped out of his portfolio with such comments, adding the Commissioner of Police’s Duty is operation while the Minister’s Duty is policy. Samuels is cautioning members of the force to refrain from such actions to avoid penalties. He says while the country looks to tame the crime monster, the minister’s remarks were made with too much haste. Samuels fears “trigger happy” police officers will misinterpret such a statement.
Meanwhile, the attorney is urging the police to revisit the JJCF’s human rights and police use of force and firearms policy, citing section 45. Samuels insists retaliation is not an act of self-defence. Watch the report:
