Member of Parliament for St Andrew Western, Anthony Hylton has voiced his objection for the government’s plans to close the Riverton City Dump. He says suggestions to the government have been ignored, which he believes could improve the conditions of the dump and prevent the possible closure.
When the announcement was made in early August by Prime Minister Andrew Holness, he mentioned briefing Hylton on plans moving forward, since the decision would affect his constituency.
Hylton says over the years, the opposition suggested ideas to improve the dump’s condition, but they were disregarded by the government.
While a timeline for the supposed closure was not announced, Hylton is adamant there is no need to close it at all. Having acknowledged the problems such as fires and environmental concerns that are associated with the dump,
He remains resolute its closure will do more harm than good.
