During the brief encounter with Tropical Storm Elsa, several houses were flooded; even though no lives were lost, the dilapidated roads are a symbol of the heavy rainfalls that left undeniable damages behind. Several roadways are still being monitored as repairs get underway. The Communications Manager at the National Works Agency (NWA) Stephen Shaw, and the Director of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM ), Richard Thompson, were guests on CVM LIVE’s Panel Discussion on Monday, July 5. They both contributed to the discussion by sharing insights into the upcoming roadworks ahead.
Despite recent drainage development, the Marcus Garvey Drive Corridor in Kingston was fully submerged over the weekend with just over 12 hours of rain. NWA’s Stephen Shaw said that the corridor is one of the lowest points in the city. He adds that in the weeks to come, the focus will be on intensifying the Agency’s Drain Cleaning Programme.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of ODPEM Richard Thompson pointed out that one of the challenges faced is that persons continue to build informal settlements in flood-prone and easily eroded areas.
