The mother of a deceased man is calling for justice for the alleged shooting death of her son by the police. The suspect in the fatal shooting of police Sergeant Averel Mccollin in Portmore, St. Catherine was allegedly shot and killed by the police on Tuesday, September 28, along Delacree Lane off Spanish Town road.
Reports are that officers responded to intelligence that armed men were seen in the area. Upon arrival at a premises, police say they were challenged by the suspect. The suspect was injured in the process and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead, but as you will hear in this report, the mother of the deceased tells a different story.
Maureen Brown, the mother of the deceased man, 21-year-old Javani Rodney otherwise called ‘Pim Pim’, is crying foul, and denouncing the police’s claim that her son engaged them in a gun battle. Brown says she was in the house when she heard footsteps.
Rodney was a suspect in the killing of 57-year-old police Sergeant Averel Mccollin on September 19. Sergeant Mccollin was playing dominoes at a yard in Gregory Park, Portmore when armed men appeared and shot him fatally.
But Rodney’s mother, who is from Gregory Park, is contesting those claims. A CCTV camera was spotted in the area where the incident occurred. The Independent Commission of Investigations, (INDECOM) has since launched a probe into the incident.
