The new gun amnesty will begin over the weekend; starting November 5, and ending at midnight on November 19, 2022. Provisions have been made for persons who have illegal firearms to hand them over without fear of prosecution.
The new Firearm Act brings with it an opportunity for those illegally possessing a firearm, to turn them in before the stricter sentencing – under the new legislation. Aware of the potential scepticism of those currently in possession of illegal weapons, the minister described the special arrangements that have been established for persons who are ready to put down their guns. Dr Chang adds that the amnesty process is not intended to reveal the identity of persons who comply the Minister urged current illegal firearm holders to recognize the amnesty as an “opportunity”.
