Officials are predicting that the implementation of the new Road Traffic Act will reduce instances of motor vehicle accidents. The long-awaited and amended act is expected to have more severe penalties, with increased requirements for motorists.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness says this will go a far way in bringing order to roadways, as the country still suffers frequent road accidents. Motorists are being encouraged to address their outstanding tickets at court before the act is officially instated. He also says the new law will stipulate several adjusted requirements for motorists, and see to improvements in the police’s efficiency. Noting under this new system, warrants will be issued in a seamless and timely manner, the Prime Minister reiterates the government’s intention to combat this issue, and any other that stunts the Nation’s development.
Despite repeated attempts to urge motorists to obey road laws, and reduce avoidable instances of accidents, the island recorded 488 road fatalities in 2022. Though officials are eager to see that number reduced, at least 14 persons have been injured in motor vehicle accidents since the start of 2023. Watch the report below:
