The rebuilding of the Spanish Town Hospital in St Catherine marks the first new hospital being built in over thirty years. Speaking at the launch of the hospital’s redevelopment, Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton says the resources are in place to begin construction.
Minister of Health and Wellness Dr. Christopher Tufton, says the new development of the Spanish Town Hospital is the single largest infrastructure development in public health in the nation’s history. Under the health system’s strengthening program that’s guiding the development, Dr Tufton says the hospital will get the relief residents and doctors have been waiting for years. He says the next step in the project includes finding a contractor to begin construction on the 6-story building.
The Minister hopes the construction process will avoid the delays met with the Cornwall Regional Hospital Project. He says the new facility will offer a range of upgraded services that will eliminate patients having to travel abroad for certain operations.
Minister Tufton says a technological upgrade to the facility totaling US 8.4 million dollars will allow electronic access to patients’ information. The redevelopment process is slated to continue with projects in St. Ann’s Bay, May Pen Hospital, and 10 health centers across St. Catherine.
