The National Solid Waste Management (NSWMA) has launched a recycling project with the Recycling Partners of Jamaica to shift the culture of improper garbage disposal plaguing the island. The partnership will see to the provision of receptacles, which they urge citizens to use, and properly dispose of “plastic only” contents.
Mayor of May Pen Winston Maragh says composting as an alternative to garbage disposal creates organic fertilizers for farmers and perpetuates a healthier lifestyle for Jamaicans. As he educates citizens on how to separate food waste, he also states the importance of properly disposing of plastics, noting its detriment to the environment. Mayor Maragh says he is looking forward to putting a depot in Lionel Town as a drop-off site for all the plastics in surrounding communities. Watch the report here:
