Since the latest episode of flooding in Hanover’s capital, Lucea on Monday, officials are concerned with the possibility of a repeat, especially during the ongoing hurricane season. Monday’s flooding delayed commuters for hours, as water levels rose uncontrollably, for the second time in as many weeks.
Whether it be due to bamboo blockages, or high volumes of water coming from the surrounding catchment facilities, water is being diverted into the roadway, instead of under the bridge. Manager of Communication and Customer Service at the National Works Agency (NWA), Stephen Shaw, says conversations are being had regarding the possibility of replacing the ineffective infrastructure
However, there are concerns. The heavy rainfall that is associated with the hurricane season will cause flooding in areas such as Lucea to continue. However, until a more permanent solution can be found, the NWA is focused on providing accurate information regarding diversion routes while also informing citizens of compromised areas they ought to avoid.
He adds the NWA is also focused on conducting drain cleaning exercises periodically to reduce the likelihood of blockages.
