NWA Presents Trillion Dollar Budget For Total Road Upgrade

The National Works Agency (NWA) presented figures stating the expected cost to conduct a total upgrade of the country’s roads, to be considered.

And, one trillion dollars is how much it is expected to cost.

The NWA made this revelation during a sitting of Parliament’s Public Accounts and Appropriations Committee on Thursday.

Roads without any upgrades will cost taxpayers $203 billion every year.

The latest assessment of the country’s road network from that National Works Agency revealed that 55 per cent are in bad condition, 30 per cent in a fair condition and 15 per cent in good condition. That was in 2014.

And with the recent heavy rainfall, the technocrats argue that some roads have gotten worse .

Now a total upgrade of the roads is expected to cost the country at least one trillion dollars.

Of the 206 roads impacted, three remain impassable.

And just on Tuesday, a section of the Irish Town road collapsed.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced a 1 billion dollar road rehabilitation project on October 27.

Each Member of Parliament has been approved 15 million dollars to cover patching, debushing, beautification and drain cleaning, work the NWA said started on Monday.

However, he said for the major road reconstruction like in Gordon Town, those will require extensive work.
