Opposition Calls for Local Government Elections

Speaking at a Party Conference in St. Ann Monday, Opposition Leader Mark Golding says COVID -19 is no longer an adequate reason to continue delaying the elections. After being delayed for two consecutive years, the Representation of the People Act (ROPA) stipulates that local government elections be held by February 2023.

The elections were first postponed in 2021 due to high rates of COVID-19 infections. In January of this year, it was again postponed for similar reasons. However, leader of the Opposition Mark Golding suggests that was not an adequate reason for again postponing the elections, especially since a General Election Was Called In The Peak Of The Pandemic Two Years Ago.

He expresses that the government has been in an unfavorable position with Jamaicans, and are therefore opting to delay the elections for their own benefit. Subsequently, Golding is calling for the government to announce the dates as soon as possible. Sources in the opposition Peoples National Party (PNP), tell CVM LIVE, they have however increased their presence islandwide, anticipating a possible announcement soon. More details in the report below:
