Opposition Senate Seat Still Marred By Controversy

Opposition Senate Seat – There is a renewed call for changes to be made to the 1962 constitution; this amid heightened public scrutiny of the provisions relating to the appointment of senators to the Upper House.

The call comes in light of the current situation within the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP).

The appointment of Peter Bunting as Opposition Senator remains at a standstill, as the country awaits Norman Horne’s decision.

The opposition People’s National Party, in a long-anticipated statement on Tuesday,  says Party President, Mark Golding and members of his executive team, met with Norman Horne on Monday.

Two options were put to Horne:

1) To either send his letter of resignation to the Governor General or

2) To indicate if he intends to take the oath of office and be sworn in as senator.

The latter would require Horne to provide documentation of him renouncing his U.S citizenship prior to his appointment to clarify his eligibility.

Horne committed to communicating his decision “in due course” and to meet Golding again by the end of this week.

Political commentator, Helene Davis-Whyte is recommending a revision of the constitution. She says that the position of a senator is of much importance and is above politics itself.

Davis-Whyte suggests Horne makes haste in his decision, so the senate can be fully constituted.
