Opposition Senator: No SOE Agreement Made with Government

Former opposition Minister of Security Peter Bunting says the Prime Minister is misleading the public on the opposition’s agreement for the State of Emergency (SOE). The opposition notes from media reports that the Prime Minister continues to blatantly lie to the public in his assertion made at Sunday’s press conference.

Opposition Senator Peter Bunting has dismissed claims made by the Prime Minister at Sunday’s media briefing regarding opposition support for SOEs.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness says there has been an agreement with the opposition that where the murder rate was 32 per 1 hundred thousand then the use of the State of Emergency would be considered reasonable and justified.

However, senator bunting reiterates that Lloyd Distant said the opposition spokesman at the time made it very clear that the opposition was not in favor of the continued use of SOEs.

“The government continues gaslighting the public on this issue, even though the Prime Minister and his Ministers… know it to be false”

On Sunday reporters questioned Prime Minister Andrew Holness on whether he was inclined to amend the constitution to remove the need for the two-thirds majority for an SOE to be approved. The prime minister notes that while the constitution was crafted to address foreign or external attacks on the state, there is a need for a review of the law which is useful in countering aspects of Jamaica’s growing crime problem due to local criminals.
