Opposition Slams DVA Amendments As Insufficient

The People’s National Party, PNP, has expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed amendments to the Domestic Violence Act, stating that the current efforts, though aimed at bolstering protections for victims, fall short of adequacy. Discussions on this matter took place in the Senate today. While supporting the intent to strengthen safeguards, the Opposition insists that the proposed amendments remain insufficient. The Opposition reiterated its dissatisfaction with the latest round of amendments to the Domestic Violence Act (DVA) during debates in the Upper House on Thursday morning. Earlier in the week, Parliament had reached an agreement on establishing a Joint Select Committee to review the DVA, which has not seen amendments since 2004. Despite this step, Opposition Senator Sophia Fraser Binns emphasized that the conversation surrounding this critical legislation should be significantly further along in progress. Watch the report:
