Opposition Wants GOJ’s Position On T&T, Venezuela Squabble

The Opposition is this evening calling on the Government to publicly explain the position taken as it relates to an ongoing disagreement between Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela.

In December 2020, a representative of the interim President of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó leveled blame on Trinidad and Tobago for a recent tragedy that befell over 15 Venezuelans who lost their lives at sea, attempting to flee economic hardship in their homeland.

Jamaica, Haiti and the Bahamas voted for a Venezuelan representative to attend a permanent council meeting, where further criticism was laid against Trinidad and Tobago.

The government’s management of the circumstances between the two countries is being regarded by the Opposition as disturbing.

Some stakeholders are demanding  a public explanation from the Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister.

That’s according to a statement, Thursday, from Opposition Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Lisa Hanna.

She says Jamaica could have handled the situation in a more responsible manner, describing the move as irresponsible and unprecedented.

Hanna says Jamaica has seemingly joined others in isolating sister nations who seek alternative approaches to US President Donald Trump’s Foreign Policy Agenda.

A former Ambassador and Representative of Jamaica to the United Nations Security Council it was a shameful act that has caused a level of disunity among the CARICOM States.
