A People’s National Party (PNP) Divisional Conference aimed at endorsing Councillor Oliver Clue, saw Member of Parliament Phillip Paulwell demanding answers to several questions in relation to Jamalco.
Paulwell also questioned the government’s position in allowing the refinery to be sold for one U.S. Dollar rather than the state purchasing it, therefore gaining one hundred per cent of the shares. Opposition Spokesman on Energy and Member of Parliament, Phillip Paulwell says he has several questions for the minister of finance regarding Jamalco, which he has been asking since January but has not gotten any concrete response.
The Jamaican government has a 45% share in the alumina refinery. However, a fire in 2021 ravaged sections of the plant and halted operations for which Paulwell recounts the government brought a claim on the insurance company. Paulwell says the government admitted the 250 million USD was recovered from the insurance company, adding the money was spent on the plant and its eighty per cent in operational mode. Yet, Paulwell questions the legitimacy of this statement. Watch the report:
