During the 2018 staging of the competition in Russia, Moscow police reported a 50% reduction in major crimes, and locally, Jamaica has also experienced a marked decrease in murders and shootings over the duration of the tournament in both of the last two editions, with a similar trend being observed during this year’s tournament.
Statistics point to an almost obligatory cessation of crime during major sporting events, as there is a general feeling of households and communities coalescing around a common cause, that also provides sheer enjoyment.
However, some believe that in order for sports to drastically reduce the prevalence of crime, sporting events would have to be consistently produced. Watch the full report:
