Curfew Hours – Prime Minister (PM) Andrew Holness has proposed revised curfew hours for the holiday period. Speaking in parliament on Tuesday, the Prime Minister told the country there could be a slight relaxation of the curfew hours for the month of December but a tightening on Christmas and boxing days.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness says balancing all the different expectations and considerations has been a challenge. He notes that out of fear of the spread of the Coronavirus, COVID-19 some persons are suggesting a tighter curfew, while other persons concerned about the state of the economy are advocating for longer hours.
The Prime Minister asserts that the government has tried to strike a balance which allows for greater productive economic activity while limiting actions that are likely to result in greater spread of the Coronavirus, COVID-19. As a result, the proposed curfew hours will be as follows. He says from January 2, 2021 to the 15th of January, the country will return to the 10 pm to 5 am curfew, however, if the numbers rise beyond reasonable expectations, the government will have to re evaluate these hours.
The Prime Minister is urging citizens to celebrate Christmas with their household, in order to limit gatherings. He’s also strongly urging those who plan to visit their loved ones in Jamaica to think twice.
Meanwhile, the leader of the opposition, People’s National Party, Mark Golding says dealing with the regulation of behaviour going into the Christmas season is a difficult task; however, he has no problem with the proposals.
