Jamaica is experiencing a labour shortage that could result in imported labour. Prime Minister Andrew Holness made the revelation on Wednesday at a groundbreaking ceremony in St James. The Prime Minister says the country could end up importing skilled workers due to increasing requests for skilled labour and underutilized capacity.
“You may be asking how, if there are still so many people unemployed?” The Prime Minister explains Jamaica is not short on workers, but skilled labourers sufficiently trained to undertake certain jobs and roles, particularly in construction, a growing sector. Holness is considering a mandatory national service for training. He has tasked HEART to train and provide the necessary skilled labour over the next two years. Failing that … Imported labour.
