PNP, JLP Neck and Neck in 2024 Local Government Election

The preliminary count of the 2024 Local Government Election by the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) on Monday night (February 26) ended with results too close to declare a victor. The ECJ announced that an official count will occur tomorrow, potentially leading to several tightly contested divisions being decided in parish courts for a final verdict.

Noteworthy victories for the Mark Golding-led PNP include re-establishing political dominance in the Portmore Municipal Corporation and sharing control of the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC).

Meanwhile, the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) maintained control over the municipalities of St Elizabeth, St Ann, St James, St Thomas, Portland, and Trelawny.

As of 9:57 p.m., the elections watchdog reported that 6,556 boxes were counted, representing 97.5 per cent of the total 6,726 boxes.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the campaign,” said Mr Holness hours after the closing of the Polling Station. Prime Minister Andrew Holness in a press conference at the Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, HQ says the preliminary numbers from the EOJ suggest if this was the general election, the JLP would maintain office.

Meanwhile, the People’s National Party and its supporters are ecstatic about the numbers in the preliminary count as the PNP HQ was overflowing with excitement and celebration. Watch:
