St. James accounts for the highest murder rate in Jamaica and the police are ramping up their community engagement efforts as they seek to build trust, however they are not alone.
On Saturday, the Head of the parish’s community safety and security branch brought on board the church for a walk through in Salt Spring which recently saw the seizure of high-powered weapons. A typical service at the Triumphant Holy Church of the Living God in Salt Spring community spontaneously turned into community worship on Saturday.
Deputy Superintendent of Police in charge of the St. James’ Community Safety and Security Branch, Angela McIntosh-Gayle who is on a mission of steering the youth in the right direction, invited the church to join the initiative.
Up to Saturday, St. James had recorded 105 murders; the most by any parish since 2022. On June 7, five firearms were seized in Salt Spring; two of them, high-powered rifles.
Pastor Desroy Brooks says a change is needed in the community. A church member is also making a special appeal to young men, on the wrong path. More details in the report below:
