Police Commissioner Supports SOPEs

Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson throws his support behind the extension, as he lauds its impact on reducing crime across the island.  Commissioner of Police, Major General Antony Anderson says the daily average of four murders in Jamaica has peaked in September, recording five daily murders, with September and October noting increases as high as 8 per cent when compared to 2021.

The Commissioner says the security forces being armed with legislative tools, like the new Firearms Act and the States of Public Emergency (SOPEs), drastically account for the crime reduction. He notes the difference the SOPEs have made during the course of its repeated imposition. “70 persons have been charged under the new Firearms Act, the majority of whom are in the 16 to 30 age group,” he informed. While lauding the police’s intelligence capability, Major General Anderson, says it has intercepted and prevented hundreds of murders.

Major General Anderson was speaking at the December 28 Press Conference at the Office of the Prime Minister in St. Andrew, where States of Public Emergency was declared by Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
