A policeman was shot and injured during a stand-off between his colleagues, and an ex-soldier believed to be mentally ill in Cumberland Meadows, Portmore, St. Catherine on Tuesday, November 2. A little girl, reportedly the ex-soldier’s daughter was also caught in the gun battle during online school.
What could have quickly turned into a fatal scene in Cumberland Meadows, St. Catherine, was averted with the help of the police swat team. Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of St. Catherine South, Christopher Phillips, says residents summoned the police, alleging that an ex-soldier who also lives in the community and is said to be mentally ill, was shooting at them.
He says upon arrival, the police were also met with gunshots resulting in one of their colleagues being shot in the leg and hand. The Senior Superintendent says the man’s weapon has been seized. He added that they were able to take control of the area until the experts arrived on the scene. At approximately 6 pm, Tuesday, he confirmed that the ex-solider is a licensed firearm holder.
SSP Phillips also confirmed that he was shot in the lower back and is in hospital in stable condition and so too is the policeman.
